A Llanidloes community event will give people the chance to go on a safari with ‘River Man’ Dewi Roberts.

Nature lovers in the Llanidloes area are invited to a special Earth Day event on April 20, where they can embark on a safari style exploration of the River Severn with the notable underwater cameraman.

Mr Roberts is a former teacher who now spends his days capturing footage of what lies beneath the murky depths of Powys’ rivers has led informative walks along the River Marteg at the Gilfach Nature Reserve, as well as featured in a TV programme about the River Wye narrated by Michael Sheen.

Speaking about his passion for Welsh waterways, he said: “I’ve always loved rivers, I’ve always lived on or near the river, in Montgomeryshire, and the photography is just a passion that’s turned into something far more than that.

“Powys is such a beautiful place and I’ve seen some fantastic things here. I enjoy all aspects of it, the wildlife and the river itself. Everything I see underwater is special.”

The free event, starting from 10.30am at Severn Port Park, will also be a celebration of river songs, featuring the Llanidloes Community Choir and more.
