Llanidloes Town Council has invited tradespeople to tender for work over the proposed renovations to the town’s youth centre.

Having shown an interest in taking over a purpose-built youth club building in the town centre, Llanidloes Town Council released an official invite for qualified trades people to provide them with quotes over renovating the building.

The building, which has been closed for several years, is currently owned by Powys County Council.

Llanidloes council expressed an interest in taking over the building the facilitate the town’s youth club, but wants to obtain an estimate of the cost to repair the building before making a formal application.

Llanidloes Town Clerk David Powell said: “getting some general estimates on how much it will cost to redevelop the building is something we need to do before getting formal approval to take ownership from Powys Council.

“Obviously our hope is to have the building under the ownership of Llanidloes Town Council, but we would not want to be caught off guard by a higher cost than we thought we’d be dealing with and then left with a building that we can’t do anything with.

“It is a slight Catch 22 situation as we’re inviting trades people to tender for work on the building before we’ve officially taken it over, but we want to be prepared for what we will be dealing with if we end up owning it.

“We will be putting together a tender document to present to the Community Ownership Fund, which should give us an idea of how to progress with the project.

"Since putting out the invite we have already had some good interest which helps in figuring out where we stand.”

County Times: Llanidloes Town Council present a cheque for £2,000 to Llanidloes Youth Club secretary Cllr Kelly

The council hopes the building will one day be the permanent home for Llanidloes Youth Club, which received a £2,000 cheque from the town council in February to help buy much needed equipment and secure the future of the club for the next 12 months.

Since opening in October 2023, the club has welcomed more than 75 children and young people through its doors every Thursday evening at their current home in the town’s rugby club, offering young people aged between 11 and 18 who live in Llanidloes or surrounding area with a space to enjoy music, games, snacks and drinks and making friends.

The club was re-started by local parents and organisations have been fundraising to support the initiative. The Rotary Club of Llanidloes donated £1,000 and St Idloes Masonic Lodge presented a cheque for £500 which was match-funded by the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Wales.
