New jobs could be on the way in Welshpool after Powys County Council approved a bid to demolish an industrial unit in the town and build five smaller units in its place.
A development that the application for planning permission promises will “facilitate employment opportunities for smaller businesses to progress within” was approved by Powys County Council on Monday, April 8, after first being submitted in January 2024.
The unit, at the furthest end of Henfaes Lane, will be demolished to make room for a series of smaller commercial buildings that would reportedly accommodate industrial and commercial use as well as indoor sales and storage areas.
The application, submitted by Ian Pryce Property Services, says: “It is required in order to facilitate an identified need for smaller industrial units in Welshpool. The existing site and building are no longer suitable for business operations and are preventing continued growth. The existing commercial unit will be demolished.

“In terms of detailed design principles and concepts, the scheme seeks to facilitate the improvement of an existing commercial site by bringing forward a new high-quality development.
“The proposed layout would support business operations by creating functional and legible space and areas for business activity together with appropriate locations for storage, parking and manoeuvring.”
The application adds that while the current building employs no full time staff, this will increase to 20 full time employees as a result of the proposals.
Powys Council approved both the demolition of the existing building and the erection of five new units, meaning the project must begin within the next five years.
