Police are investigating after a vehicle fled the scene of a crash on a busy road near Newtown town centre on Monday evening (April 1).

Fire and ambulance crews also responded to the collision which closed a section of New Road between St David's House and Domino's pizza shortly after 8pm.

Occupants of the vehicle that remained at the scene of the crash were checked over by paramedics.

The fire service said police are carrying out an investigation into the vehicle that fled the scene.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 8.05pm on Monday, April 1, the Newtown and Montgomery crews were called to an incident along New Road, Newtown.

"Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving two private motor vehicles, one of the vehicles fled the scene.

"The remaining vehicle’s occupants self-extricated and were cleared by Ambulance Service personnel who were also in attendance.

"Dyfed-Powys Police are carrying out an investigation into the vehicle that fled the scene.

"Crews utilised small gear and grab packs at the scene.  Crews left the scene at 9.29pm."
