A construction company picked to build 32 houses on behalf of Powys County Council is looking for local businesses to help with the project.

J. Harper and Sons, has been chosen to build dozens of one-bedroom, energy efficient, affordable flats on the site of the former Robert Owen House, in Newtown, for a Powys County Council affordable housing project.

The company will be holding a Meet the Buyer event at Newtown Football Club on Wednesday, March 27, looking for experienced and capable construction businesses in the county to help them with the development.

At the event, interested businesses can speak to representatives from J. Harper and Sons about the packages that are available as part of the development.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, said: “This development in Newtown is part of our ambitious housing building plans and is an important project for this council to help tackle the housing emergency.

“This is a great opportunity for local businesses in the construction industry to work with J. Harper and Sons on this exciting development that will deliver one of our important priorities.”

The council awarded J Harper and Sons the contract in November 2023, as part of a development funded by the Welsh Government that will see the council own and manage the new homes, which will be allocated to tenants through ‘Homes in Powys’, designed to be a one-stop shop for all social housing in the county.
