WELCOME to bygones as we transport our beloved readers back to the 1970s.
It is not a decade with the best reputation in terms of fashion and music with bell bottoms and disco ageing rather badly.
However fashion is cyclical and this reporter is sure there will be a day soon when all of Powys’ teenagers are wearing the fashions of John Travolta and bouncing down the street to the sounds of ABBA.
It was a bad time for Britain with the recession lasting from 1973 to 1975 when GDP declined by 3.9%.
It took 14 quarters for the UK’s GDP to recover to that at the start of recession.
OTHER NEWS:
- Plans to convert Newtown church into homes - but bodies may have to be removed
- Powys farmer named among farming champions for International Women's Day
- Drink driving brewery worker labelled 'a disgrace' by court
The Vietnam War came to a close, the Watergate scandal led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, the United States ended direct involvement in the Vietnam War and the Iran Hostage Crisis dominated the news.
Meanwhile life in Powys trundled on as it always had with towns and villages full of life and overcoming the challenges the decade threw at them.
It is our pleasure to share a selection of pictures from the 1970s.
Our first picture is of pupils at staff at Abermule Primary School in 1972 which was shared by County Times reader Glyn Reese.
Next we share a picture of members of Newtown Amateur Dramatics Society in Laura Ashley dresses in 1974.
Our next picture shows children enjoying fancy dress fun at Montgomery Show in 1974.

Bettws Cedewain Primary School pupils in 1974.
We do not have many details for our next picture apart from the players represented a Newtown pub in the Newtown Darts League during the 1970s. Recognise any familiar faces?
Our next picture shows Julie Mantle and some of her retinue after being declared 1976 Glantwymyn Carnival Queen.
Newtown Donkey Derby Day fun in 1976 is the focus of our next picture. The event was once a popular summer attraction but appears to have ended in the 1980s. Do you have any memories of the Newtown Donkey Derby? Get in touch and let us know.
Castle Caereinion scooped the double honour of Best Kept Village in Powys and in the Montgomeryshire District Council area in 1976. Some of the people responsible are pictured.
Do you recognise any familiar faces? Perhaps you were involved in the Best Kept Village campaign in the village.
Our final picture shows Woolworth staff depart the Newtown branch on a sponsored walk to nearby Bettws Cedewain in 1974. Recognise any familiar faces?
