All home to school and college transport in Montgomeryshire has been cancelled for Thursday (February 8) as heavy snow is forecasted overnight.

Pupils attending primary and secondary schools in the Llanidloes, Newtown, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfyllin, Machynlleth and Welshpool areas will not be able to travel to classes by bus.

Powys County Council said it does not mean that schools are closed, "just that school transport will not be provided in these areas tomorrow".

The Met Office issued an amber and yellow weather warning for snow and ice in north Powys from 8am to 3pm on Thursday. Residents have been told that there could be serious disruption, especially in rural communities.

In a statement posted on social media on Wednesday afternoon, the council’s Passenger Transport Unit said: "Our detailed weather forecast for Thursday 8th February is showing quite a high accumulation of snow in the north of the county to fall between 4am and 9am.  This falls across the home to school transport journey times.

"Therefore, we have decided to cancel all home to school and college transport tomorrow for all schools that are in the Montgomeryshire area. This means Llanidloes, Newtown, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfyllin, Machynlleth and Welshpool schools (secondary and primary) will not receive school transport.

"The weather is forecast to improve tomorrow, and we anticipate running transport as normal on Friday.

OTHER NEWS:

"Please note, we are not saying your school is closed, just that school transport will not be provided in these areas tomorrow.

"Given the difficulty in predicting snowfall accurately, snow may fall across other parts of Powys, and it will be the decision of your bus company whether to operate or not dependent upon local conditions."

No schools have been listed as closed on the Powys County Council website as of Wednesday evening.
