I am writing with reference to the sad news that Mantles shop in Trefeglws is closing.
I’m a frequent visitor to the area and have purchased items from the shop on many occasions.
My observations over time, and from talking to some local people, are that there appears to be a hard core of regular customers, but the vast majority of the village is more prepared to use up time and fuel to drive to Newtown or Llanidloes etc for their shopping, rather than supporting their local store.

I’m sure that there are many similar instances across Wales, and people have to recognise that if they don’t use their local services then they will be lost forever.
Let’s hope that, if the shop opens again in the future, then the village will give their full support by using what is on their doorstep.
