It’s been confirmed that Mid Wales’ largest town will be hosting a carnival for the first time in years.

Newtown Carnival organisers are urging people to get on board by taking part and attending the town centre celebrations which will take place on Saturday, June 8.

The search is on to find Newtown Carnival Queen 2024 for the parade as well as local singers, bands and dance troupes to entertain the crowds.

Volunteers are also needed to share their time on the day to make this summer’s festivities one to remember for hundreds of people anticipated to attend the carnival.

OTHER NEWS:

Jen Reynolds, carnival committee chairperson said: “This year we are looking for tenders for a funfair. Unfortunately, whilst we didn’t have a carnival our previous fair Mark Holmes had to find an alternative site and is now committed, so if you can help let us know.

“We would like to ask if anyone could provide our visiting queens and judges with sandwiches and cakes on the day in our tea tent. We would pay you for this and you can also trade with refreshments throughout the day.

“Any tenders for hot and cold food through the day would be appreciated. We have a pizza truck, ice cream van and bar already.

"We thought about entertainment and are calling out to any local talent and dance troupes.

“If you need help in obtaining a lorry for our parade let us know and we will try to help.

“If you would like a stall on the field, charity or otherwise, we would like to hear from you.”

Aspiring carnival queens are asked to send a photograph along with a letter containing their details and why they would like to be this year’s queen to Carnival Committee at The Monty Club, 11 Broad Street, Newtown, Powys SY16 2LU by Thursday, February 20.

Details about a disco for the attendants will be announced by the carnival committee at the beginning of March.

The carnival which had been running for 136 years prior to the Covid pandemic had been postponed since its last event held in 2019 after organising became too much for the small group of volunteers.
