Yellow weather warning issued for Powys for snow and ice

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for the entire county this evening (December 2) with the cold conditions expected to cause disruption across Powys.

The service has warned residents that "snow and ice this evening and into Sunday morning may lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure".

The Met Office has warned that the cold weather could lead to  disruption to transport with "some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services."

They add that there will probably be "some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths" and warn that this could lead to "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces".

The Met Office are advising motorists that "it is safer not to drive in icy conditions", but if you have to travel to "look well ahead for potential hazards and keep your speed down".

They add that "accelerating, braking, steering and changing gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid and that "using a higher gear may be more appropriate to help grip on packed ice" as "using a higher gear helps manage engine power making it easier to find traction".

If you are walking they advise that you "plan to leave the house five minutes earlier than normal" as "not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips and falls".

They are also encouraging residents to check on elderly relatives or neighbours by "making sure they have enough food supplies in case they cannot go out" and "offering to clear their paths when you clear yours and spread salt. You can use ordinary table or dishwasher salt - a tablespoon for each square metre you clear."
