A POWYS couple who got married earlier this year used their wedding as a way to raise funds for a local cancer research fundraiser.

The Llanfair Caereinion Cancer Research Committee received a boost to their fundraising effort in the form of a donation of over £4,000 from a recently wedded couple.

In November the Chair of the committee, Margaret Hughes, received a cheque of £4,750 Rhys and Catherine Morris.

The money was raised during a charity luncheon following Rhys and Catherine’s wedding, which was held earlier in 2023. The luncheon was followed by a promise auction that was held after the wedding at the bride’s home near Trefeglwys.

Rhys and Catherine said: “We were amazed by the amount of money raised at the charity luncheon following our wedding and thank everyone who kindly contributed through donating or buying of the auction prizes.

OTHER POWYS NEWS:

“We wanted to allocate the proceeds between a number of local charities and are pleased that the Cancer Research Committee at Llanfair Caereinion is one of the beneficiaries.

“Unfortunately we all know someone who is or has battled against this disease, so were pleased to be able to help in some way.”

The money provides a boost to Llanfair Caereinion Cancer Research Committee, who announced at their annual general meeting in May that they had raised £10,336.

Margaret Hughes, Chair of the local fundraising Cancer Research Committee at Llanfair Caereinion said: “We are delighted to be a beneficiary of this welcome donation and thank Rhys, Catherine and their families for this generous support.

“This is a significant boost to our fundraising efforts this year and we are delighted they chose to support our efforts to ensure that together we will beat cancer.

“We wish the young couple, who are living near Llanfair Caereinion, the very best for the future and thanks them for thinking of us.”

Following on from the success of the committee’s Plygain, a traditional Welsh Christmas service, held last year they are holding another to raise funds in 2023.

The event will be held at Moreiah Chapel in Llanfair Caereinion on Friday 5 January 2024 at 7pm.

They invite all, both singers and listeners, to come along to enjoy a long held tradition of the Montgomeryshire area.
