The Times said Christmas was the perfect time to visit Powis Castle's as its "extravagant looks" come into their own.

The Times said: "With a lavish interior covered in wood panelling and murals, Powis has extravagant looks that come into their own at Christmas.

"Taking inspiration from treasures within its collection, each state room is decked out to transport visitors to a different time or place — a metaphorical sleigh ride that takes in Elizabethan Wales and Venice in its heyday, via India, China and beyond.

"Kids will love spotting the felt mice, handmade by staff and volunteers, while from December 14-23 colourful projections will illuminate the castle’s 13th-century walls (adults £15, children £7.50, under-fives free).

"Stay close by at the Bothy, a gorgeous half-timbered building set within the magnificent gardens."

Vistors on Tripadvisor have described the castle and gardens as "glorious", "grand" and "well worth a visit".

One review read: "Really wow castle! Never been inside until now and it’s wow so much to look at and facisnating! Lovely gardens will be back in the summer when there’s less rain!"

"The castle and grounds are breathtaking for their setting and beauty. Although we visited on a very busy and hot Saturday, it didn't detract from a most enjoyable experience.

"Well worth a visit - take plenty of pictures because the castle and views are a joy!"
