Long-awaited repairs to fix one of Wales' most historic buildings will resume next week with work expected to be completed at the beginning of May 2024.

Repairs to The Old Market Hall in Llanidloes, the only building of its kind to survive in Wales, are set to begin on Monday (November 27) which will involve road closures and traffic lights in the town centre.

Powys County Council has been overseeing the structural repairs, which will include the use of new technology to strengthen the stability of the building after the local authority received listed building consent.

Work to fix the much-loved landmark began earlier this year but was put on hold by Powys County Council in March when issues about the Grade I-listed building's structure were found.

Councillor Jake Berriman, cabinet member for a connected Powys, said: “It’s important that these works are carried out to ensure that this iconic building is protected for future generations.

“The phasing of the latest works has been difficult as the repair and redecoration works are required on each elevation of the building as we wanted to keep roads open and to maintain traffic flow in the town.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents for their patience while the works are carried out.”

The application for listed building consent was submitted by Hughes Architects on behalf of the council.

The repairs include installing 83 Cintec anchors to make the wall structurally sound and cutting back the existing oak lintel and to splice in new oak and strengthen it with stainless steel.

The Old Market Hall is thought to have been built around 1600 with later alterations in the 18th Century and was listed on the basis that it is the only market hall of this type to exist in Wales.

In April, Llanidloes Town Council raised concerns that the building had been damaged by passing vehicles while repair works were postponed, with one councillor describing the situation a “shambles”.
