The National Garden Scheme awarded the Hanging Gardens in Llanidloes a Community Garden Grant of £5,000 in 2022 to help create a thriving space for workshops, growers and visitors on a rundown site in the town centre.
This has been a vital resource for the community, including young adults with learning disabilities, helping them to socialise and learn new skills.
Susan Paynton, county organiser for North Powys, presented the Community Gardens Plaque to Llanidloes Hanging Gardens’ Merlin Blockley.

Fran Blockley, chair of The Hanging Gardens, said: “A grant from the National Garden Scheme has been a huge boost to our project, allowing us to transform a derelict corner of town in a beautiful and productive space - even growing food for our adjoining café which can now boast the freshest food in town!”
In addition to annual donations to nursing and health charities, the National Garden Scheme gives grants to help fund community garden projects.
People or organisations that would like to apply on behalf of their community need to apply for the 2024 round of grants by 12pm on Monday, November 13. Go to the website Community Garden Grants at ngs.org.uk to find out more and download an application form.
