A fraudster jailed after posing as a cruise ship captain selling fake luxury holidays has been ordered by a court to make a nominal £1 crime proceed payment.

Jody Oliver, who was from Powys, refused to leave his cell today (Friday) for a court hearing which ordered him to pay back a small amount of money.

In total he had conned people out of £150,855.96.

The figure comes from two fraud and theft cases heard at Merthyr Tydfil and Worcester crown courts.

He was ordered by Recorder Eardley KC to pay £1 or a default sentence of one day in prison at a proceeds of crime hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday, October 27.

OTHER NEWS:

The 45-year-old was jailed for six years last year after duping friends, their families and acquaintances out of around £300,000 by offering them knock-down prices for non-existent cruises.

The former special police constable was also living a double private life and divided time between his wife in south Powys and his boyfriend in Newport on weekends before he was arrested at his parent's home in Presteigne in February 2019.

County Times:

Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard today that any available money that Oliver has was handed over for another fraud case at Cardiff Crown Court earlier this year when a proceeds of crime order was made for a "greater" figure.

In July, Oliver pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation between June 14, 2016, and January 18, 2019, when he appeared in court on Friday (July 28). The money given by victim David Hawkes was supposed to be used for legitimate expenses including bills for tax and litigation proceedings.

Recorder Eardley also ordered Oliver, who is serving his sentence at HMP Parc in Bridgend, to pay a victim surcharge within three months of his release from prison.
