I wonder if people in the area around Llanfair Caereinion and Llanerfyl fully understand what is being planned by the various windfarm companies.

The Llanbrynmair windfarm (between Llanbrynmair and Llanerfyl) has permission already for up to 25 turbines (around 125 metres high).

As I understand it Vattenfall are planning for up to 18 turbines at 220 metres (Mynydd Lluest y Graig). Bute Energy want up to 25 turbines up to 220 metres tall (Llyn Lort).

All these windfarms will be very close together, in fact the last two will be right next to each other.

OTHER NEWS:

Therefore and unspoilt and peaceful area may find itself home to around 70 turbines. Rather a lot for one relatively small area I’d say.

Then there will be the new tracks/roads, concrete hardstanding for the turbines, a collector substation and the like – oh, and lights at the top of the nacelles so planes don’t fly into them at night.

Bute Energy (in the guise of Green GEN Cymru) also wish to add a 40-mile line of pylons (but say we shouldn’t worry as they won’t be as big as the ones National Grid wanted last time).

What can we look forward to as a result of all this so-called ‘green’ energy?

An area loved by tourists blighted by the sight and sound of huge turbines; traffic disruption during construction; misery for people who live nearest to the turbines; displaced wildlife; but of course no cheap energy or compensation for those residents who will be badly affected.

Will a ‘community fund’ make up for all this? Probably not. Whatever your views on renewables, for, against or undecided, you really need to be aware of the overall scope of these plans, which will mean huge changes for the area.
