A man living with cancer has raised more than £3,000 after having his hair shaved for Macmillan and his beloved local football team.

Merv Rees, who's 67 years old, said he was "overwhelmed" by the support shown to him and his family since his lung cancer diagnosis.

In front of a packed-out crowd at The Herbert Arms in Kerry, Merv braved the shave by his daughter Joann hoping she “wouldn’t cut my ears off”.

The charity event raised £3,300 through generous donations and a raffle of almost 100 prizes for Kerry Football Club's new changing room fund and Macmillan Cancer Support.

"It's tremendous," he said. "It means a lot. It's very emotional.

"It’s been a fantastic turn out. The generosity of people has been great.

"I thought I’m going to have chemo so my hair is going to fall out so I might as well do it before it does and see the mess on the pillow."

Merv said he wanted £1,400 of the money raised to go to his former football club.

"They want a new changing room because the one they’ve got is falling down and they want to build a new one so the whole village can use it because they can’t at the moment because the toilet facilities are non-existent."

Merv and his family will be hosting a presentation evening for the charity head shave at The Kerry Lamb at 8.30pm on Saturday, September 30.
