A Powys farm has been recognised for a prestigious animal welfare award at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

Great House Farm in Llanstephan, near Builth Wells which is owned by Lord Milford and managed by Gary Williams, has been announced as the regional winner of this year’s Animal Welfare award in the M&S Select Farm Awards.

As the winner in the animal welfare category for England and Wales, Lord Milford was invited to receive the award during the M&S Select Farm Awards ceremony at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

OTHER NEWS:

The judges commended the farm for its outstanding efforts and for setting a high standard for others in the industry to follow.

Andrew Edwards, of Dunbia Farmers, said: “The whole farm is managed in a way that gives all the animals a level of husbandry which is the best I have ever seen.

“It is always a pleasure to visit the farm and see the stock when I go over to grade lambs. They always have everything ready, and the lambs always look a picture of health, as does the suckler herd.”

The organic farm spans some 550 acres and produces both lamb and Hereford beef. Over the past 18 months, the business has been supplying M&S with its high-quality lamb.

Gary Williams, the longstanding farm manager, acknowledged that he is “fortunate to be supported by others who are as dedicated and passionate as he is about prioritising the health and welfare of livestock”.

He also attributed the success of the business to its longstanding relationship with the local veterinary practice and other consultants.

County Times:

Steve McLean, Head of Agriculture and Fisheries at M&S, said: "Every day, our Select Farmers and suppliers go to extraordinary lengths to deliver great quality M&S food, while demonstrating best-in-class innovation, animal welfare, sustainability, and biodiversity.

"M&S Select Farmers are renowned leaders in promoting high animal welfare standards. Great House Farm has wholeheartedly embraced this ethos for a long time, and their continued commitment to these standards should be truly admired."

As the regional winner of the Animal Welfare award, Lord Milford received a certificate and M&S hamper at the M&S stand during this year’s Royal Welsh Show.
