A pupil from Forden Primary School was selected as the winner in Wales for a country-wide engineering competition.

On July 4, six pupils from Forden Primary School were invited to an awards ceremony in Cardiff for a leading STEM programme, with student Evie Rees taking the top prize for Wales.

Primary Engineering’s annual competition ‘If You Were an Engineer, What Would You Do?’ invites students across the UK to imagine if they were an engineer, what problem would they most like to solve and submit their designs to the programme.

Having spent the past few weeks developing their ideas for designs that would benefit their every day lives, 28 ideas from Forden were shortlisted for the Leaders Award, with six making it to the awards ceremony held at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

The Judges Award for the overall winner in Wales went to Evie Rees, who designed Bubble Bath Safety Foam which changes colour from red to clear to show when the water is a safe temperature to use.

Other pupils from Forden Primary School who were highly commended include Lucy Davies, Bradley Ratledge, Ethan Scrimgeour, Isobel Tinney-Lewis and Amelia Maguire.

As well as conceiving of a design, pupils in the competition are asked to create their own detailed explanation about their idea, use persuasive techniques to appeal to the judges and demonstrate how they have refined their ideas over time.

Headteacher Cath Fowler said: “It was a long project that involved the pupils learning about what engineering is, seeing presentations by engineers for organisations like NASA and the RAF, as well as looking at and analysing designs.

“As well as a competition it was a chance for pupils to follow the design process, see how vast of a field it is and how many opportunities there are.

“It’s a fantastic project, one that allowed pupils to bounce ideas off of each other and develop their designs over a long period of time. We’re over the moon not just with our pupils who went to the awards ceremony in Cardiff, but everyone who took part. I think every pupil who took part was inspired in some way.”
