A highly regarded Powys born professor has sadly passed away.

Emeritus Professor Huw Jones, originally from Llanidloes, has passed away after a short illness.

Huw moved to Dundee in 1961 and spent the rest of his working life there and it was where he also got married, and brought up his family.

Described as being “ferociously talented” as a geographer overall, his particular interest was in population geography, and he succeeded in receiving some acclaim for the establishment of an internationally regarded research centre at Dundee.

Later he served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Head of the Department of Geography at the University of Dundee.

He was described as being “very mindful of encouraging younger colleagues and attracted much funding for the department”.

He took great interest in the university’s cricket team, captaining it for many years, and was also avidly devoted to football and rugby, supporting Dundee United and Wales respectively. Snooker and bowls were also favoured pastimes.

In retirement, he travelled extensively and enjoyed the times spent with his younger family.

Huw died peacefully at home with his family in London, in whose care he had spent the last few months.

A service of remembrance will be held in Broughty Ferry and details of this will be announced in due course.
