Aberystwyth University has joined Cardiff and Swansea as one of the top-rated universities in the country.
In this year’s rankings, Wales showed it had a strong higher education landscape, as evidenced by the impressive rankings achieved by its universities in the highly respected and independent Complete University Guide.
In the overall league tables, Cardiff was joined by Aberystwyth University (39th) and Swansea University (40th) in the top 40 “reflecting their commitment to delivering a comprehensive and enriching educational experience”.

Cardiff University once again solidified its position as the premier institution in Wales, clinching the top spot in the for the country and an impressive 21st position in the national rankings – up 5 places on their 2023 placing – reaffirming its status as a leading institution renowned for its exceptional teaching and groundbreaking research.
Professor Amanda Chetwynd, chair of the Complete University Guide Advisory Board, said: “Congratulations to Cardiff University for achieving a top position in this year’s Complete University Guide regional rankings. The rankings show just how high the standards are among Wales’s top universities.
“Many prospective students in Wales are keen to find the best university in the local area. The Complete University Guide’s regional league tables are a valuable source of information to give local prospective students a greater understanding of what higher education options there are in Wales.”
Every year the Complete University Guide releases UK university and subject league tables to support prospective students to make informed decisions about their future. The regional league tables help people find the right university for them in their area.
Other Welsh Universities, however, did not fair quite so well overall such as Wrexham Glyndwr University which finished bottom at 130th but it did rank highly in specific subjects such as Sociology where it came in 25th nationally.
Similarly Bangor University, which came 52nd nationally, achieved 4th position nationally for Agriculture & Forestry as well as Health Studies.
