A COLOSSAL crowd are set to watch Newtown in their quest for Europe, with a ticket giveaway for this weekend’s deciding match being taken up by more than 1,500 fans.

The Robins agreed with opponents Haverfordwest County to make the match free to enter – and fans have snapped up tickets in their hundreds.

As of Wednesday, more than 1,500 tickets had been snapped up, with more than 1,000 of those claimed by home fans.

It means Newtown will be backed by one of their biggest crowds in years in a crunch tie that will see the winners enter European competition in July.

It would be Newtown’s third consecutive European campaign.

The Robins booked their place in the final with a 4-2 win at Bala Town on Friday night and were left to wait to see whether they would be bound for Cardiff Met or hosting the Bluebirds in the play-off final.

Haverfordwest’s penalty shoot-out win in the capital on Saturday ensured Newtown would have home advantage as Chris Hughes plots European qualification once more.

Newtown fans are enjoying a golden age of European football with Hughes leading the Powys club into Europe in 2016, 2022 and 2023.

The Robins also remain one of the few Welsh clubs to register victories in Europe with Newtown prevailing in both legs against Maltese side Valletta in 2016 and also overcoming Torshavn HB of the Faroe Islands last year.

The match stands to be the biggest game of the season, and will kick off at Newtown Football Club’s Latham Park at 5pm on Saturday. Two goals from Aaron Williams and Zeli Ismail cancelled a double from George Newell as the Robins overcame the challenge of Bala on Friday.
