A man who was found by passers-by "out of his head drunk" has been handed a conditional discharge by a court for pleading guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Newtown.

Geraint Griffiths, 35, had fallen on a witness' car in Plantation Lane, Newtown at 11.40am on Sunday, April 16, before a group of people tried to help him up.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, said: "He was initially calm, but it was clear he was under the influence of alcohol.

"He said 'I swear to God get off me' in an aggressive manner. Police then contacted his partner to come help him.

"He became more and more aggressive. Officer tried to calm him down, but this was futile".

Robert Hanratty, mitigating for Griffiths, said: "He admits he has a very significant drink problem. It’s a shame a diversionary scheme like a caution was not applied.

"He’s desperate to cure this illness. He wasn’t being deliberately abusive to officers. In view of his commitment to cure this problem, it’s a conditional discharge."

Magistrates at Welshpool Court told Griffiths that he was not being punished when he appeared in the dock on April 25 but if he was to commit any offence in the next 12 months he may be resentenced.

Griffiths, of Pine Court, Newtown was also ordered to pay a £26 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
