Two award-winning businessmen running successful companies in the Newtown area have shared key pieces of advice with local young people who struggle at school.

The Game Change Project (TGCP) in Aberhafesp helps teenagers raise their aspirations, build confidence and improve their wellbeing by taking part in fun activities while also gaining life skills.

Hilltop Honey managing director Scott Davies and civil engineering company Evabuild's Nick Evans paid a visit to the Project's base to meet young people and give them advice on how to become successful and have a positive impact on the world.

Nicci Brown, youth volunteer coordinator, said: “We encourage the young people with any ideas that they come up with and try to instil great work ethic so to enhance this further we invited two local businessmen to talk to certain groups.

“Both Nick Evans, MD of Evabuild, Newtown and Scott Davies MD of Hilltop Honey, Newtown have been massive hits here. Both men talked about their time working their way to the top and how hard work pays off.

“TGCP are extremely grateful that Nick and Scott gave up their time to visit.”

Young people at TGCP helped Aberhafesp YFC organise a tractor run in December to help raise £680 which has been split between the Project and rural mental health charity The DPJ Foundation.

They also organised Caersws’ first Christmas Jumper Day which involved businesses inviting staff to wear their favourite festive knitwear to raise money. TGCP aims to get more locals involved next year and make it an annual occasion.

To spread the word about what the Project does for local young people, a team has produced branded merchandise including hoodies, polo tops, beanie hats and caps which are now available for the general public to buy.

Nicci added: “We are very grateful to the following funders for supporting our organisation to encourage young people into volunteering and to gain valuable business skills for the world of work. Huge thanks to WCVA Volunteering in Wales Grant and Comic Relief Organisational Growth Grant.”
