Two cherry trees have been planted in a village near Newtown to commemorate the UK’s longest reigning monarch.

Hafren Trefoil Guild, which is part of the Girlguiding family, planted trees to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee which celebrated her 70-year reign and as a tribute following her death aged 96.

Speaking after members gathered with their watering cans and spades at Aberhafesp Community Centre on February 4, Gwyneth Brown, chairman, said: “The Guild would like to say a big thank you to the Community Council for digging the holes for the trees and allowing us to plant them there.”

Following the death of the Queen in September 2022, The Queen’s Green Canopy announced an extension to the end of March to give people the opportunity to plant trees to honour late Her Majesty.

Trefoil is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and members of the Hafren Guild are hoping more will join the group them at their monthly meetings in Aberhafesp.
