MANY of us enjoy a curry.

Some of us like them mild and for others it is a case of the spicier the better.

Curry is an Anglicised form of the Tamil word kaṟi meaning 'sauce' or 'relish for rice' that uses the leaves of the curry tree.

It was introduced to English cuisine from Anglo-Indian cooking in the 17th century, as spicy sauces were added to plain boiled and cooked meats.

Curry was first served in coffee houses in Britain from 1809, and has been increasingly popular in Great Britain, with major jumps in the 1940s and the 1970s.

Powys is fortunate to have a number of top Indian restaurants with legendary menus and, according to TripAdvisor, these are the top ranked five.

Fabian's Kitchen, Llandrindod Wells

One reviewer wrote: "We had curry, pizza and a child's meal plus deserts and we all enjoyed it, pizzas are made on naan bread with a really tasty tomato sauce and perfect amount of toppings - very delicious. All is freshly made, you won't be disappointed."

Another wrote: "My two daughters, together with my wife and I took a chance on this excellent restaurant and returned every night of our stay. Great food, cooked well burgers, curry and pizza with some special deserts. Friendly staff. We will be back. Loved it. (Good value too).

Another wrote: "You always get a warm welcome in Fabian’s. Opted for the fish curry as it was recommended by a friend and it was great - fish in a curry works really well. They also have a good selection of drinks and desserts too.

"The staff are all friendly, attentive and there if you need anything. Definitely recommended."

The Chai Shop, Bishop's Castle

A reviewer wrote: "What a great find. Walking around Bishop's Castle this lovely little tea shop and Indian cafe stands out for its colourful art, food and owner. Terrific tea, charming Chai, spectacular Samosas and blindingly good Bhajis, along with a great selection of main courses and cakes not tasted this time around. But we'll return. Tiny but terrific.

"Well worth squeezing in if you can find a table not occupied by local regulars. Guaranteed a stimulating chat and convivial company."

Bahar, Newtown

One reviewer wrote: "Great food and friendly atmosphere, Mahfuj provided friendly service with a side of banter. Would recommend."

Another wrote: "The menu had a few spelling mistakes which never strikes me as a great place to stop. But the food was incredible. Don’t let it put you off. The staff were very friendly and the phone was very busy so must be popular for takeaways."
