A Powys thoroughbred horse breeder has seen one of its stallions awarded a coveted new honour.

Ian Garbett and his wife Gaynor from Adfa near Newtown run the multi-award winning Fraithwen farms, breeding world class Friesian horses – some of the most sought after in the world.

The couple have had much success in the field and now one of their stallions, Koris, has been awarded the rare honour of being approved for breeding with no limit within the Barock Pinto studbook in Assen in the Netherlands.

OTHER NEWS:

This follows on from the success the couple achieved last year when their Ster stallion, bred in Holland and trained in Wales, also gained the approval of the Barock pinto studbook.

“Koris now has some big shoes to step up to but being only three he will be allowed to mature first before starting his career,” said Mr Garbutt.

Mr Garbutt, a former firefighter from Much Wenlock, said they bred the highly acclaimed Koris 3 years ago from their Ster mare Trude to a warmblood stallion Goshka Ringo from Germany. But he will have to do well to match their award winning stock.

County Times:

“Jurre, the first stallion we had, carried out a dressage examination in the carriage and gained straight eight scores across the board – giving him the highest test score in the carriage to date,” said Mr Garbutt.

“We bred a Friesian foal we named Jeldau four years ago from, again, a Ster mare.

“At just six months old back in 2019 during the UK gradings of the Friesian horses, which Dutch studbook judges come to inspect, she gained a first premie, and became UK supreme champion.

“In September last year, she gained a 1st premie Ster again and was awarded reserve UK supreme champion, behind only one imported mare, and she was the only UK horse given first premium.”

The say that the breeding and training will go on and are hoping for more success with recent developments with the multi-award winning Jeldau.

“Jeldau has now produced a beautiful foal,” said Mr Garbutt. “Everyone at Fraithwen is excited to see grow up.”
