Fundraisers have raised hundreds of pounds for Llanidloes hospital to support the staff’s delivery of palliative care.

Llanidloes War Memorial Hospital’s palliative care unit is one of the many good causes and charities including the Wales Air Ambulance that have benefited from donations raised by the Caersws Whist Drive Group who meet every Friday at 8pm inside the village hall.

Delma Thomas and Beryl Calvin-Thomas recently presented a large cheque for £500 to hospital staff including Dr David Moore, Sister Ellie Jolley-Dawson, healthcare assistant Sharon Brown and Vicky James.

“They were thrilled to bits with it,” Caersws Whist Drive’s Delma Thomas said. “Raising money for the palliative care unit is important because it’s local to us. We’ve had two people from Caersws who have been looked after by the palliative care unit and they’ve been very comfortable there.

“It’s also because people in the village are looked after very well there and we try to keep things local, to benefit local people.”

The Llanidloes War Memorial Hospital is to get a new sensory garden thanks to funding from its League of Friends and The National Lottery’s Community Fund.

Situated next to the hospital’s Palliative Care Suite - which is known as the Garden Rooms - the new garden will be for the use of all patients, staff and visitors to the hospital.

Work on the garden will start this year with an Autumn completion target.

The palliative care unit in Llanidloes hospital was established through funds raised entirely by the the community and opened in 2018.
