A woman from just outside of Montgomery has raised thousands for a local charity by taking on a epic cycling challenge.

Gill Beavan took on the 4-day cycle challenge to raise money for Lingen Davies. The 271 mile challenge saw her cycle round three capital cities in four days – from London to Amsterdam to Breda to Brussels.

Mrs Beavan took on the challenge after her husband Rob received help from the charity after becoming ill.

“My husband had been poorly he had an operation of a tumour last February March time he had he had intensive radiotherapy and Chemotherapy,” said Mrs Beavan. “Because my husband had been so poorly and my husband had been so good we just as a family wanted to raise money for the help and support Rob had.”

Mrs Beavan who has previously cycled from London to Paris to raise money for Leukaemia research is surprisingly “not a regular cyclist” and found the event a huge challenge.

“I was very sore, I got stung by a wasp which I reacted to quite badly on my arm on the second day, so I was on anti-histamines for the rest of the challenge,” said Mrs Beavan. “It was quite wet the last three days, but you met some amazing people all doing it for various reasons.”

However, Mrs Beavan said that the goal of helping the charity kept her going – “We all know someone who has been touched by cancer unfortunately.”

Along with this their daughter Ellie Beavan, proprietor of Winsbury Dairy, ran a milkshake stall outside Shrewsbury hospital to raise even more money for the charity adding over £1,000 to the overall total which came in at a £7,207.

“We’re farmers so a lot of family friends, a lot of businesses who we deal with were very generous and we were very appreciative of the generosity with everything at the moment,” said Mrs Beavan.

“Very happy with the money I raised, very pleased that I did it. That I raised so much money for a charity that helped Rob and lot of people in Mid Wales and Shropshire.”
