A festivalgoer who was pulled over by police had so much cocaine metabolite in his blood that he gave a reading that was 10 times over the drug driving limit.

Stephen Kelly, 31, was banned for 12 months and ordered to pay £239 in court fines and costs after he admitted the offence when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates' Court.

Kelly was stopped on his way back home from a music festival on June 5 by police officers near the A483 in Arddleen after they noticed that the number plate on his white BMW was obscured by an old taxi badge.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, told the court that officers noticed Kelly had "glazed eyes and small pupils" when they spoke to him.

Kelly admitted having 537 micrograms of the cocaine metabolite Benzoylecgonine when the legal limit is 50 micrograms per litre of blood.

Amy Valentine, defending, told the court: "It had nothing to do with the manner of his driving. Mr Kelly had been at a festival the day before. He tells me he had a full night sleep, eat well and felt absolutely fine to drive. He tells me that he had no idea drugs would be still in system. There was no poor weather, and the road conditions were not busy.”

Magistrates disqualified Kelly, of Stockbridge Village, Knowsley from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £34 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
