Powys Liberal Democrats appear to be preparing for a general election after the last week of political crisis in Westminster.

The Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats have put out a call for donations for a 'General Election Fighting Fund' and claim “every day this Conservative Government remains in power is another day of chaos.”

Alison Alexander, chair of Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats thinks a general election could be imminent after the resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss, despite one not being called as the Conservative Party goes through another leadership contest.

“There is now a clear groundswell from the public for a General Election and we could be going to the polls in a matter of weeks,” said Ms Alexander.

“In Montgomeryshire, the Liberal Democrats stand a real chance of being part of the movement that removes every single Conservative MP from Wales.

“That is why we are now getting ready to take the fight to the Conservatives, win in Montgomeryshire and give our rural communities two strong voices that actually stand up for our interests.”

The party are hoping to bounce off their success in the last local elections, when they won the popular vote in Montgomeryshire’s three largest towns (Newtown, Welshpool and Llanidloes) and doubled their number of councillors.

However, the likelihood of an imminent election is disputable as no Conservative MPs are currently publicly supporting a return to the polls – meaning we would not be due another general election until January 2025.

The Liberal Democrats have not held the Montgomeryshire constituency since 2010 when Lembit Opik lost the seat.

They would also be looking at an uphill battle overturning incumbent Conservative MP Craig Williams - who took 58.5 per cent of the vote in the last election and enjoys a healthy majority of over 12,000.
