A Powys woman has roller skated 50 kilometres to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

Bethany Saxon, 39, from Llanfechain works for Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital as an Anatomical Assistant saw the fundraiser via Facebook and decided to give it a go.

She said: “I saw the fundraiser on Facebook as it's an organised fundraiser for Great Ormond street to skate 50k in August and although it's quite hard to find areas to skate in the country decided to do it.”

The challenge was quite flexible with the only rule being that you complete 50km something that Bethany has taken advantage of: “You can make up the 50k as you like. I have skated Hyde park and the lake then just generally skated around or gone to organised indoor skating events to get some kilometres in. You have the month of August to make up the 50k.”

Bethany went on to complete the challenge last night (August 30) at Lake Vyrnwy and manged to exceed her initial fundraising goals, raising £175 for the charity.

She said the challenge was physically difficult but rewarding: “It wasn't too bad skating the lake although parts of the roads were a bit harder to skate on and my feet were buzzing after from all the vibrations.

“It's also been nice to do something fun. When were young we do lots of fun things we enjoy then often we get older and have less fun, it's been enjoyable getting my skates on.”
