Llangurig and District Show marked its 70th anniversary with a “truly memorable day” in glorious sunshine.
It was the first time since 2018 that the village was able to host their milestone show following a three-year break caused by bad weather and the coronavirus pandemic.
Organisers praised the show as a “huge success” at at Tynymaes Fields by kind permission of E.T. Bound & Co, which was opened by Show Presidents Mr and Mrs Hefin Bennett, who have held many past official roles and are both founder committee members of the society.
“It is great to be back after the absence and to be able to meet and celebrate as a community,” said show secretary Jackie Bound.
It was a special occasion for Reuben Twiby-Williams and his pony Daisy who impressed the judges so much to be named supreme champion of the horse section at just four years old. The little boy from Llandinam brought home six first places and a second place, reserve champion ridden and champion in hand and also had a chat with Craig Williams MP.
“Reuben was thrilled and very happy to win the cup which is as big as him almost,” said proud mum Jess. “Each time he won he would shout ‘I won another rosette a red one’ and would be smiling the whole time. Reuben cuddled Daisy his pony after each win too and congratulated her as well.

“Reuben now calls himself the ‘champion’ which he is and uses this phrase to remind himself how amazing he is. He said the other day ‘champions don’t need carrying, they can walk’. He is so proud of himself as is all of his family and friends.”
To reflect the village show’s endurance over 70 years, displays going back to the 1950s included the ‘Gentle Giant’ shire horses, vintage machinery, show memorabilia, native rare breed sheep and a hand sheep shearing demonstration.
There was a wide variety of competition classes in the marquee including horticultural, floral art, provisions, arts, crafts and a local section. On the show field there were dog, sheep, horses, sports, darts and tug of war competitions. The children’s area which featured Panic Circus, face painting and a soft play area. The day cumulated with the grand raffle and a barbecue.
Show secretary Jackie Bound added: “The committee is very grateful for the support of the community and local business for their adverts, trade stands, generous donations and presentation plaques and cups.
“A big thank you for all the hard work leading up to and during the show day helping to prepare, steward and judge. Last, but not least the exhibitors and spectators for making this a truly memorable day.”

Horticulture
Overall winner of Horticultural Section was R. Holmes who also had the highest number of points in vegetables. The winner of the Flowers section was E. Hughes, and the Floral Art winner was M. Jones.
Arts, crafts and cookery
Overall winner of Provisions, Needlework, Arts & Crafts L. Rouse, Highest number of points in Provisions J. Jones, Needlework & Knitting L. Rouse, Craft D. Jones, Woodwork & Metalwork R. Jones, Handicrafts S. Parker-Munn.
