Montgomery Young Farmers Clubs has officially opened its new offices in Welshpool Livestock Market after a search that began in 2013.

A special event was held on Thursday evening (July 28) to welcome members to the new base, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The event was attended by Montgomeryshire Senedd member Russell George, as well as former and current chairmen of Montgomery YFC who oversaw the move over the last few years.

County President Sarah Lewis said: "Here we are, after almost 10 years, we have arrived.

"It all started around 2013, when the president at the time, Derwenna Davies, was asked to approach the manager of this very place to see if there would be the possibility of Montgomery YFC having its own space on this site."

Conflicting factors meant that the Montgomery YFC eventually moved to the Old College in Newtown, but a few years later were in need of a new home when Powys County Council wanted to regain the use of the office space.

The group then decided to reopen discussions with Welshpool Livestock Market.

Mrs Lewis added: "We needed central, accessible, and flexible space. We believe this is now a perfect fit. It is somewhere where Montgomery YFC can have their own identity.

"This focal point for Montgomery YFC puts us on the map. It is a space for our staff, for our members and friends to use effectively and efficiently to develop the organisation."

Montgomery YFC is a voluntary youth organisation led by young people, for young people. Over 600 young people aged between 10 and 26 years are currently members through the 18 clubs operating across Montgomeryshire.

Current County Chairman, Aled Rees, said: "I think this new location is fantastic for our staff, it's a modern, refreshing office space for meetings and socialising, and I expect members to make full use of it."

Commenting on the event, Russel George said: "I was grateful to be invited to attend the official opening of Montgomery YFC's new office.

"Young Farmers Club is a fantastic movement that connects young people across the county, it is highly successful in Montgomeryshire, continuing its decade-long tradition of strong membership. I'd like to add my own thanks to all who volunteers who give so much of their time."
