Machynlleth is holding a Summer Fair next month to celebrate and support seasonal foods from the area.

The event will be at the Main Hall and lawn in the Plas grounds in the town on Saturday, August 20.

As well as celebrating seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in the town, the Fair’s organisers say it will be an opportunity to inspire and enable local growers.

Angela Paxton, event organiser, said “We hope there will be something for everyone at this event, from learning how to grow your own vegetables all year round, to summer pruning, cooking demonstrations and children’s wildlife and gardening activities.

“We want to celebrate and encourage more community food growing, be that in allotments, community spaces, or home gardens.

“We can grow a wide range of food all year round in Wales, which saves money, gives us healthy foods and good for the planet.”

The fair will feature free workshops and activities, such as stalls, cooking demonstrations, and a ‘Gardener’s Question Time’.

The panel for the Gardener’s Question Time will feature celebrity gardener Huw Richards, whose gardening themed YouTube channel has over 600,000 subscribers.

Also joining the panel are local experts Joey Hughes from Merched y Berllan / Orchard Daughters, Callum Johnston from Tan Y Llyn nurseries, Petra Weinman, Head Gardener from Centre for Alternative Technology, and Grace Crabb, from Grace Crabb and Company.

The free gardening workshops and activities include sowing seeds for autumn and winter, summer fruit pruning, composting, a seedling swap and ideas for growing your own herbal tea.

The stalls will include a local food tent with locally grown produce and local community groups such as Edible Mach, Centre for Alternative Technology, Green Network Support, Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens and Tyfu Dyfi.

Arfon Hughes, from Tyfu Dyfi said: “We hope people will bring their home grown veg to challenge the chefs, best jams and chutneys to compete for a prize, summer seedlings to swap at the Seedling Swap stall, and tricky questions for the Gardeners Question Time panel.

“This is all about bringing our local gardening and growing community together.”

The event will run from 11am to 3pm.
