The Ysgol Cwm Banwy school finally celebrated its opening by honouring a treasured member of the community.

The school opened in 2020 but celebrations were put on hold due to the pandemic. To celebrate children pupils were selling their new book 'Deryn', and performed their own self-produced play based on it with their own song and dance numbers.

They also honoured the late well-loved former dairy farmer and chair of the governors at the school, Richard Tudor, who died in an accident while working on his farm in Llanerfyl in 2020.

The school opened a garden in his honour, with his wife Catrin who works at the school performing the opening ceremony.

She said: “It’s an emotional day for us all as a family and as a school.

“I work in the school and obviously Richard was chair of the governors and all I can say he’d love the fact the garden is in memory of him.

“He’d love to see the children in the garden, gardening and enjoying it. Also, the opening of the school and the performance, he used to come and help us with the performances.”

Headteacher Betsan Llwyd said she was very proud of the work the pupils put into not just the show and the work done over the last two years.

“Everything has gone perfectly the children have worked so busy on writing the script of the show, they’ve formed the back drops, they’ve done the costumes, they’ve written the songs, they’ve written the melodies so everything has come together," she said.

“It’s a celebration more than anything of Ysgol Cwn Banwy, we’ve been open two years but we haven’t been able to obviously open officially because of the pandemic and everything.

“You know I’m just very, very proud of the children and everything we have been able to do really over such a difficult time. We’ve got the back up here of the community today because the hall was full.

“We’ve got another performance this afternoon and I do feel very proud of the work we have been able to achieve in such a difficult time, it’s a new beginning now and we need to move forward and provide the best education for the children here in the valley.”
