Three women from Powys have raised £3,000 for cancer research by taking part in a gruelling 24-hour golf challenge.

Maggie Cadwallader, from Welshpool, Chris Thomas, from Llanymynech, and Jo Lawson, from Lakeside, played through 54 holes to reach the finishing line.

The three women played on three different courses at Welshpool, Llanymynech and Lakeside, on June 16 and June 17, the hottest day of 2022 to that point.

Starting at Llanymynch at 3pm on Thursday, they travelled to Lakeside to play the Front 9 before braving the Welshpool hills on Saturday and then returning to Lakeside for the Back 9, making it round all three courses in the allotted time.

The three golf clubs all donated money as well as prizes for the raffle and ‘Guess the Number of Total Strokes’ competition.

In total, the three golfers raised £3,000 for Breast Cancer Now, a charity that provides care to those affected by breast cancer and funds research towards treatment.

All three women are survivors of breast cancer, making the cause extremely close to their hearts.

At the presentation, local organiser Linda Sagar said: “I would like to thank the golfers, the clubs, the donors and all the helpers for a great effort and a magnificent donation to further breast cancer research. We need these funds and we are so grateful.”

The trio averaged only seven over their handicaps on each of the three undulating courses in blazing sunshine.

While the challenge is over, people can still donate to the cause at
