A logo for a new north Powys school has been unveiled out of more than 200 entries.

Alaw Francis' winning design symbolises the bridging of Llanfair Caereinion's primary and secondary schools over the River Banwy that flows through the town.

Ysgol Bro Caereinion will officially open in September on the current sites of Llanfair Caereinion C.P. School and Caereinion High School.

Caereinion High School pupil Alaw won a £200 cash prize for her design which was chosen by Ysgol Bro Caereinion's temporary governing body.

The 14-year-old worked with graphic designer and former Caereinion High School pupil Ellyw Jones to create the final version.

Cllr Gareth Jones, temporary governing body chair, said: “I would like to thank all those who submitted their design and congratulate the pupils and Ellyw for their excellent creativity. The unveiling of this logo marks an important milestone towards the opening of Ysgol Bro Caereinion in September.”

Alaw Francis, 14, whose winning design forms the basis of the new Ysgol Bro Caereinion logo, is presented with his prize by Huw Lloyd-Jones, Headteacher of Ysgol Bro Caereinion.

The design also represents the unity with the wider community and the landscape of Montgomeryshire, and captures the generations coming together from the youngest to the oldest pupil.

Cllr Pete Roberts, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “The new logo is a key point on the creation journey of a new school so congratulations to Alaw on coming up with a simple yet elegant design that captures the spirit of the catchment and well done to everyone else who put their own ideas forward.”

The other seven designs were highly commended by the Temporary Governing Body were Lucy Tomkins (Caereinion High School); Catrin Watkin (Caereinion High School); Hannah Shirley Smith (Caereinion High School); Abigail Shore (Llanfair Caereinion C.P. School); Oscar Bates (Llanfair Caereinion C.P. School); Georgia Harris (Llanfair Caereinion C.P. School) and Mya Kyi Millins (Ysgol Cwm Banwy).
