A new festival celebrating biodiversity and zero-waste is coming to Powys next week.

The first Kite and Meadow Festival will give visitors the opportunity to make heritage crafts through hay making with scythes, a ‘bioblitz’, kite flying, puppet making and windmill workshops.

The free two-day event takes place on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, at the fields north of the Baptist Chapel in Newchapel, near Llanidloes.

Local band The Klezmonaughts will play an acoustic set along with food provided by Newtown’s Hummingbird Caribbean food truck from 5pm on Friday when the festival starts.

Saturday is promised to be a day full of exciting activities from noon, with talks about establishing meadows and their management, puppet making, windmill creating, kite flying, meditation led by Mantra Vibes, a barbecue, scything demonstrations and wildlife workshops.

Organisers are encouraging visitors from Llanidloes to walk, cycle or use the free shuttle bus service provided during the festival period. Llanidloes Saint-Terres walking group are going to decorate The Gorn Way from town to the festival, and the Explorer Scouts will have a stall en route to refresh anybody walking to the festival from Llanidloes.

The Wilderness Trust in partnership with local organisations Handpowered UK, Gwneud Gwair Cymreig, Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, Zero Carbon Llanidloes and Llanidloes Primary School are organising the festival.
