Youngsters from across Powys have been competing and winning medals at the 100th Urdd Eisteddfod after months of preparation and support from teachers, families and friends.

Europe's largest touring youth festival got underway in Denbighshire this week with pupils competing in events such as literature, poetry, dancing, music and art.

Talented harpist Elin Beattie, from Ysgol Uwchradd Llanidloes, came first in the solo competition for Years 7, 8 and 9, and Ysgol Gynradd Llanfair Caereinion also won first place for their creative dance which judges praised as "striking and powerful which brought tears to many people's eyes". The school congratulated pupils, Mrs Ellis and Mrs Owen for the "beautiful performance".

The week started with success for Ysgol Cwm Banwy, Llangadfan who won second place in the folk dancing and the CogUrdd cooking competition with Nansi Eluned Rees winning third place. Ysgol Pontrobert's Jac Efan Jones solo performance earned him a third-place medal.

Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng brought home a third-place medal back to Welshpool for their dramatic performance "from the heart" focussing on mental health in the agricultural sector and The DPJ Foundation.

It was a terrific Tuesday for Ysgol Penygloddfa pupils who won three Urdd Eisteddfod medals. The Newtown school earned third place in the unison party, cerdd dant party and recitation party competitions for Welsh learners.

The Eisteddfod has been postponed for the last two years due to Covid-19. Europe’s largest touring youth festival, which annually attracts over 65,000 competitors and 100,000 attendees from all over Wales.

Machynlleth will have the honour of hosting the Urdd Eisteddfod in 2024 when it returns to Montgomeryshire for the first time in 36 years when it was held in Newtown in 1988. The last visit to Powys was was in 2018 when Brecon and Radnorshire hosted the prestigious event at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd.
