BERRIEW Football Club welcomed the descendants of their most esteemed past player for the club's end of season presentation evening.

George Antonio remains part of mid Wales folklore and remembered as the man who brought the legendary Stanley Matthews to play a match in Berriew in 1968.

George was born in Whitchurch and went on to play for Stoke City alongside Matthews during the 1950s.

In 1962 he was unveiled as player-manager of Mid Wales League club Berriew who he led to the title in 1965 and league cup in 1966.

Upon his retirement in 1968 the great Stanley Matthews brought his Port Vale side to Berriew's Talbot Field and graced the turf in a testimonial.

Ever since the name George Antonio has become synonymous with the Ardal North East club.

As such his daughter, Jennifer Hudson and great grandson Harley Kempster along with his father Richard were welcomed as guests of honours at the club's presentation evening at the village's Talbot Hotel on May 13.

The manager's player of the season award was awarded to Joe Haycock while Steff Rogers went home with the players' player and supporters' accolade.

Kofi Davies won the reserve manager and players' player awards while Marc Jones, Steff Rogers and Craig Pearce received awards for surpassing 250 appearances for the club.

For next year, Berriew are reinstating the George Antonio Player of the Year Trophy in honour of George's memory and his achievements with the club.
