Newtown's High Street has received a boost with the opening of a new butchers this week.

Meatmasters Butchery opened its doors on Monday (May 16) with the promise of bringing a market day experience to shoppers with the addition of further locally sourced produce in the future.

The business is a family affair with the husband and wife team of Dan and Giverny Allen-Rafferty behind the counter.

Dan is also preparing for his role in the Welsh squad which takes part in the Olympics of Meat in California in September as the only Powys-based butcher in a team of the best nine from across Wales.

"Newtown is our local town and we have a great location," Dan said.

"The building is wonderful and we have tried to keep as much of the character as possible."

Dan and Giverny are also keen to expand their range to other farm goods, particularly cheeses, and their spacious new shop floor promises to offer a market day experience of its own.

Dan said: "Newtown is a market town and we want to stock local farm goods for local people to enjoy."

Business has already taken off as shoppers welcomed the opening of a new business to the town.

"We opened on Monday and business has been good," said Dan. "People are happy to see a new business in the High Street and we are looking forward to welcoming one and all."
