A man had to have his broken jaw screwed back together after he was punched in a Welshpool pub's beer garden.

Welshpool Magistrates' Court heard that Thomas Manuel went up to his victim and punched him in the face, before delivering a further four blows after moving inside The Angel in August last year.

Manuel pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent to Jordan Beeson when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

However the prosecution did not accept the basis of his guilty plea and the case will now be adjourned for a Newton hearing to determine the factual circumstances.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that Manuel was "essentially putting a lesser culpability defence".

The court heard that on August 14, Mr Beeson was "minding his own business" in the beer garden and saw a group of people he knew from Welshpool Rugby Club.

"The defendant asked the victim what his problem was with his nephew and the victim replied that he didn't have a problem. There was no element of a threat there," Mr Espie said.

"The defendant clenched his fist and punched the victim in an unprovoked attacked and punched him again with both fists approximately four times - this is all on video - before the defendant was dragged away.

"The victim sat down to drink his pint but phoned his mother to say that he might need to go to hospital. He had difficulty closing his mouth and had a chipped tooth. He was admitted as an inpatient for an operation which fixed his jaw with screws. It was a substantial injury."

Robert Hanratty, acting for Manuel, said the 33-year-old, from Trewern was "significantly" antagonised by the victim who implied a threat towards him and his nephew. That claim will be the basis for the Newton hearing.

"He asked what the problem was to defuse the situation, "Mr Hanratty said. "The defendant felt threatened and struck out heavily towards the face and several more times. It was disproportionate and deeply regrets the injuries sustained."

The case was adjourned and the Newton hearing is expected to take place on July 18 at Welshpool Magistrates' Court. Manuel was granted unconditional bail.
