A STOLEN bike from a state-of-the-art bike shelter in Newtown has been returned but two remain missing, police say.

Two high-end bikes were stolen after thieves smashed into the building near Newtown playpark sometime between Sunday evening (May 1) and Monday morning (May 2).

Dyfed-Powys Police has now issued an appeal for the public's help in locating the two red Fuji Absolute bikes.

"These imported bikes are unique to the UK so easily identifiable," Newtown Police Station said.

"We know that witnesses have seen these bikes in the Vaynor area but they have since been moved."

Open Newtown, the owners of the bike hub, said the people responsible “do not represent our good town”.

“We won’t be deterred by mindless vandalism and theft,” said Stuart Owen, Enterprise Development officer. “We’re more disappointed than angry. If anyone wanted to borrow a bike they only needed to ask.

“If the individuals are so desperate that they thought theft of bikes was their last resort, then that’s a sad reflection of society and their lives. These people do not represent our good town.”

The shards of glass have now been cleared and a section of the bike shelter has been boarded up.
