A POWYS cafe says it is taking action to improve its hygiene standards after being given a zero-star food hygiene rating.

Brecon Tap at The Bulwark in Brecon was rated zero-out-of-five following an assessment on March 28, this year, but bosses now say that they are awaiting a new test having acted on the points raised.

The score is the minimum given by the Food Standards Agency.

The inspection noted “major improvement necessary” across two of the three areas assessed.

This included hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, as well as management of food safety which includes checks in place to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat.

Improvement was also necessary in regards to the cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building.

A spokesman for the cafe said: "I have had the EHO officer come out after a week of her first visit and tell us our food rating is a four now and have done all the changes that was needed to be done but can not get that rating till we have another visit.

"We have paid for a revisit and just waiting for it to be done, also during this time of waiting I have done more work to get the level to a 5 (fingers crossed)."
