An investigation looking into police actions before a 36-year-old man was killed in a crash on the Newtown Bypass has been completed.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began their investigation following the fatal collision involving a van and a livestock lorry in April last year.

The police watchdog said it understood at the time that Dyfed-Powys Police had received a call shortly before expressing concern for the man’s welfare, and a marked police car was in the vicinity at the time of the collision.

After being notified of the incident by Dyfed-Powys Police, IOPC investigators were sent to the scene and a post-incident procedure began to gather information.

The IOPC has now confirmed that it has completed its independent investigation and the findings are expected to be published following the inquest into the 36-year-old man's death.

“We have completed our investigation into police actions prior to the fatal road traffic collision near Newtown last April in which a 36-year-old man sadly died," an IOPC spokesperson said.

"We have since shared our investigation report with the coroner, family, and Dyfed-Powys Police.

“We have also submitted a file of evidence to the coroner to assist with the inquest. As is usual with our investigations involving deaths, we don’t expect to be in a position to issue our findings publicly until the future inquest.”

Emergency services were called to the A489 Newtown Bypass just after 6.30pm on Sunday, April 25, 2021, following reports of a collision involving a van and a livestock lorry carrying sheep which was overturned on the road.

Sadly, the van driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the lorry driver was taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries.

The bypass was closed for almost 24 hours after the collision took place while accident investigation work was carried out.

The date of the inquest into the 36-year-old man's death has yet to be set by the Coroner for the South Wales Central Area.
