A Welshpool primary school has been awarded a "substantial" grant to transform a field into a state-of-the-art sports pitch.
Work has already started at Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School after securing funding from Sports Wales
The school said that the field at the back of the school had been "unusable" since moving to the Salop Road site in January 2021.
Phase One started last week, the school said, and grass will be removed for new drainage and turf.
Plans include allowing the pitch to be used out of school hours by local sports clubs.
Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School said: "The school has been awarded a substantial grant by Sports Wales to transform the rear field that has been unusable since moving to the site into a state of the art pitch. Phase one started last week. The grass will be removed before drainage is installed and new turf relaid.
"Included in the grant funding is the cost of flood lighting to allow the pitch to be used out of hours by local sports clubs. The school applied for grant so that the community can get full use of a purpose built sports field."
Sports Wales is the national organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and physical activity in Wales.
