Three high-end bikes have been stolen after thieves smashed into a bike shelter in a Newtown park causing extensive damage.

The incident is believed to have happened on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2) near the new riverside venue development in the Back Lane car park.

The three burgundy Fuji Absolute road bikes, each worth under a £1,000, were taken during the break-in which left shards of broken glass strewn near a children's playpark.

People who may have seen or heard what happened at the bike are being urged to contact the police or Crimestoppers anonymously.

Open Newtown, the owners of the bike hub, said the people responsible “do not represent our good town”.

“We won’t be deterred by mindless vandalism and theft,” said Stuart Owen, Enterprise Development officer. “We’re more disappointed than angry. If anyone wanted to borrow a bike they only needed to ask.

“If the individuals are so desperate that they thought theft of bikes was their last resort, then that’s a sad reflection of society and their lives. These people do not represent our good town.”

The shards of glass have now been cleared and a section of the bike shelter has been boarded up.

The state-of-the art timber and glass panelled bike shelter was opened in November 2021 offering cyclists to store their bike securely in the town centre for an annual fee.
