A new festival celebrating the legacy of Laura Ashley, Robert Owen, Pryce Jones and David Davies is coming to Newtown next month.

The Powys Pioneer Heritage Festival will be held at the iconic Royal Welsh Warehouse, which is also known as the Pryce Jones building, from 2pm on Saturday, May 14. The event is free to everyone.

Organisers say the celebration will take place on the 251st birthday of Newtown-born philanthropist Robert Owen and the 60th anniversary of Laura and Bernard Ashley relocating their business to Carno.

Ann Evans, one of the event's organisers, said: "These pioneers like others have paved the way for others to follow, we are sharing their cultural heritage legacies along with local cultural heritage custodians and attraction exhibitors who are sharing the archives of memories of these four significant Welsh pioneers whose entrepreneurial activity and passions for social change helped to shape and regenerate Newtown.

"This last two years have been very difficult for local attractions and this will help showcase their organisations and promote their new events and exhibitions going forward.

"We hope we can enhance the profiles of these local pioneers developing local civic pride, co-creating new enterprises and ongoing events and exhibitions for the future and generate heritage-led tourism opportunities to improve the local economy."

The next project from Heritage Hub 4 Mid Wales will be in Newtown's Bear Lanes Shopping Centre where NPTC College Newtown students will display a mural of Laura Ashley.
