POWYS politicians have given mixed reaction to the news that the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer will be fined after breaching lockdown restrictions.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were handed a fixed penalty notices (FPT) following gatherings held at Downing Street.

The Lib Dem MS for Brecon and Radnorshire, Jane Dodds, said Powys Conservative MPs Craig Williams and Fay Jones should call for resignations from the pair.

Mrs Dodds said: "Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied, they must resign from their positions at once.

"While people in Wales were playing by the rules at great personal expense, those in charge thought they were above the law.

"This also will come as a painful blow to all those Covid bereaved families in Wales.

"The Welsh public deserves much better.

"If the Conservative Party is to have any legitimacy in Powys, Fay Jones and Craig Williams need to show some backbone and be calling for resignations immediately instead of constantly just continuing to toe the party line."

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams expressed his support for Mr Johnson.

Mr Williams said: "The Prime Minister & Chancellor are right to apologise and take responsibility.

"They are also right to focus on the economic and security challenges we face.

"I will continue to fully support them both in the important work that they are doing.”

Montgomeryshire Labour called joined Ms Dodds in calling for Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak to resign.

Ms Jones saw via Twitter: “Today’s revelations from the Met simply follow on from the PM accepting responsibility, apologising and implementing change.

“This process must be allowed to go on - especially while we support Ukraine and tackle the cost of living.”

A spokesman for Montgomeryshire Labour said: "Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak broke the law.

"If they had a shred of a morality or a shred of understanding of the level of suffering millions went through, they would both walk out of Downing Street and resign.

"It is shameful and disgraceful that they won’t.

“It is also very disappointing to see the backing they receive from Montgomeryshire’s MP Craig Williams.

"We recognise this was the same or similar tweet to that of so many Conservative MPs who are coming out in the defence of their loving leader.

"Mr. Williams needs to put the people of Montgomeryshire first and stand up for what is morally right.

"How can any Conservative support these actions and pretend not to be shamed by association?"

First Minister Mark Drakeford added he did not see how Mr Johnson could carry on.
